MYTH: Hospice is Only For Cancer Patients

While many of our patients are receiving hospice services as a result of cancer, that is not the only the illness that can result in the need for hospice services. People needing hospice care are diverse. They are old and young, and in-between; they are male and female; they are people with lots of family and people with very little or no family; and they are people who have been diagnosed with a variety of illnesses.

Some of the other illnesses that may result in the need for hospice care are as follows:

-AIDS
-Heart Disease
-COPD
-Emphysema
-End Stage Renal Disease
-Parkinson’s Disease
Multiple Sclerosis
-Stroke
-Alzheimers
-Motor Neurone Disease
-Muscular Dystrophy

This is far from a complete list, but it gives you an idea of the broad range of illnesses that can lead to the need for hospice care.
